Sign in with Google or Microsoft

Sign in to the staff app with your work Google or Microsoft account instead of an emailed code; the Google account of your Causefolk email connects itself.

For staff

Instead of waiting for an emailed code, you can sign in to the staff app with Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft. If your Google Workspace or Gmail account uses the same email address you sign in to Causefolk with, just use it: the first time, it connects itself. A Microsoft account, or a Google account with a different email address, you connect yourself once under Account security.

Which accounts work

  • Google: a Google Workspace account (your organization's Google account) or a Gmail address. A personal Google account that was created with a work email address can't be used.
  • Microsoft: a work or school account. Personal Microsoft accounts, such as Outlook.com or Hotmail, can't be used.

You can have one Google account and one Microsoft account connected.

Sign in with it

  1. On the staff sign-in page, choose Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft, below the emailed-code form.
  2. Sign in to Google or Microsoft if asked, with the Google account that uses your Causefolk email address, or with an account you connected.
  3. If you have an authenticator app, enter its code on Confirm it's you, as after the emailed code. Your Google or Microsoft two-step verification doesn't replace it.

You then land in the staff app. The first time you use the Google account of your Causefolk email, it's connected for you: Account security shows it as "Connected as" its email. Everything else stays the same: "Confirm it's you" before sensitive actions, the sign-in email from a new device, and being signed out after 12 hours without activity or after 7 days.

The email address must be exactly the one you use for Causefolk. Another address of yours, such as an alias or a Gmail address written with different dots, doesn't count: connect that account under Account security instead (below). A Microsoft account never connects itself, whatever its email: connect it once under Account security, and from then on Continue with Microsoft signs you in.

If you see "That Google account can't sign you in yet. Sign in with the emailed code, then under Account → Security connect it, or remove any account listed under Linked but not connected.", do that. The same message names Microsoft for a Microsoft account.

Connect an account yourself

You need this for a Microsoft account, and for a Google account whose email address isn't your Causefolk one. You need two-step verification to connect an account. If you don't have an authenticator app yet, Causefolk asks you to set one up first ("Set up an authenticator app before connecting Google or Microsoft."). See Two-step verification.

  1. Open Account security, at the bottom of the staff app's sidebar, above your email (on a phone, in the menu).
  2. In Sign in with Google or Microsoft, choose Connect Google or Connect Microsoft.
  3. If you're asked to confirm it's you, enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app and choose Confirm.
  4. Sign in to Google or Microsoft with the account you want to use. You have 10 minutes.
  5. Back in Causefolk, enter your authenticator code again if asked. Account security then says, for example, "Google connected. Next time, you can continue with Google to sign in." and the account shows "Connected as" its email.

From then on, Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft with that account signs you in.

If it doesn't work, Account security tells you why:

  • "We couldn't connect that Google account." Check three things, then try again: use a Google Workspace account or a Gmail address (for Microsoft, a work or school account); finish within 10 minutes of choosing Connect; and remove any account listed under Linked but not connected (if a connected row shows two addresses, disconnect it and connect again, as explained below).
  • "That Google account is already connected to another Causefolk account." Each Google or Microsoft account can belong to one person only.
  • "Connecting Google took too long. Try again." Rarely, the 10 minutes ran out just as you came back. Try again.

To switch to a different Google or Microsoft account, choose Disconnect, then connect the new one.

Linked but not connected

If Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft refuses an account that uses your email address (for example a personal Google account created with your work email, or a Microsoft account you haven't connected yet), or a connection is refused, Causefolk may still remember that account. Account security lists it under Linked but not connected. While it's there, signing in with Google or Microsoft doesn't work for you, not even with an account you did connect. The emailed code always works.

The text above that list says: "These accounts block signing in with Google or Microsoft until you remove them, unless it’s the Google account of your Causefolk email: continuing with Google connects it."

To fix it, choose Remove next to the account, then Yes, remove. Connecting an account again also clears it, and so does Continue with Google with the Google account of your Causefolk email.

If you had already connected that kind of account (Google or Microsoft), the extra account isn't listed there: it shows on the connected row instead, with two addresses after "Connected as". This happens, for example, when you connected a Google account with a different email and then used Continue with Google with the account of your Causefolk email: only one Google account can be connected, so the second one is refused. Until you fix it, signing in with Google or Microsoft doesn't work for you (the emailed code does). To fix it, choose Disconnect on that row, then sign in with the account you want to keep (the Google account of your Causefolk email connects itself; any other account, connect again).

Disconnect

  1. Open Account security and choose Disconnect next to the account.
  2. Choose Yes, disconnect (and confirm it's you if you have an authenticator app and are asked).

Account security then says "Google disconnected. Signing in with Google again using your Causefolk email connects it again." for Google, or "Microsoft disconnected. Sign in with the emailed code, or connect it again." for Microsoft. A browser already signed in with that account stops working within about an hour.

Disconnecting doesn't block the Google account of your Causefolk email: the next time you choose Continue with Google with it, it connects itself again. A disconnected Microsoft account stays disconnected until you connect it again. To stop someone on your team from signing in, remove them from your organization.
